up in Hell: He wants no-
This brings me to my final observation. Eternal life is possible for those who believe
in Jesus. that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. To
qualify for this eternal life you have to be anybody. The older English has ‘whosoever’.
You can be old or young, tall or short, fat or thin, black, white or any shade in
between, male of female, clever or dim. Jesus is looking for anybody at all. It
is more difficult for children to qualify for their preferred secondary school than
it is for people to qualify for eternal life. It is more difficult to get a job
than to get to Heaven. Your sweetheart might say, “No.” when you proposed marriage.
Jesus will always say, “Yes.” when you ask Him for eternal life. But we have to
ask in a specific way. Firstly we need to thank Jesus for dying on the Cross for
us. Secondly we have to tell Jesus we are sorry for our sins. I do mean tell Jesus
in prayer, not a priest. Thirdly we have to ask Jesus to forgive us and to cleanse
us from the sin that has made us ‘dirty’ in God’s sight. Fourthly, and this is the
really hard part, we have to give Jesus permission to be our Lord and Saviour. If
we do this in a genuine way Jesus will come into our heart and give us a new nature
to serve God with. This is called being born-
