you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.  (John 8 verses 3 – 6)  Jesus got rid of His enemies by suggesting "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.  At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. (Verses 7 – 9)  Then He told the lady, "Go now and leave your life of sin." (Part of verse 11)  In a real sense Jesus demonstrated that He is the Light of the World in this situation.  He is not so much concerned with what we have done in our past as to what we will do after we have encountered Him.  He wants to forgive our past so that He can change and enrich our future.

John carefully lists in his Gospel every occasion that Jesus talked about light.  Let us do a quick read.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."  ( John 3;17 – 21)  Here Jesus says that our attitude of heart will determine how we react to the light that He brings.  If we like doing bad ‘stuff’ we will scurry off into the dark and stay away from Jesus, the Bible and the Church.  If we want to do good things, or if we want to change so that we can do good things, we will be attracted to the light.  We might start reading the Bible or listening to a Christian radio station or go to something at the local church.  We will be come like a child dipping his toes into the sea before daring to take a paddle.  If we have decided it is imperative that we change our lives we will deliberately walk out of the dark and into the light of His Presence.
